BigBlueDFW - Mock Draft Pick 1.0

As free agency slows down, we begin to move closer to Draft Day 2017. Fans of BigBlueDFW look forward to picking the first round talent they believe will make their way to the New York Giants, and provide bragging rights to the individual who picked the correct player. Historically, the Giants believe in a philosophy of drafting the best player available. While I believe they won’t deter from this, there are years where you still have to draft a best player available at a position of need. This is one of those years. Baring a slip of a can’t miss talent, I believe the Giants will look towards a player that fits the culture and necessary needs of the team.

For the 2017 Draft, the New York Giants select…….. Garrett Bolles, OT, Utah.

In recent years the Giants have seen how both a solidified offensive and defensive line controls the tempo of the game. Limited contribution from the running game proves the point that the offensive line needs work. With a 6’5” frame and 34” long arms, Bolles has the body of a lineman that can work inside or outside. With John Jerry resigned for three more years, DJ Fluker on a one year deal, and Bobby Hart having gained some experience, the Giants have the ability to bring Bolles along slowly somewhere along the right side. He offers depth along the line should someone get hurt. While a little undersized, with regards to weight and mass on his 297lb frame, the ability to play multiple positions offers the Giants front line a versatile player who can move as needed. Something we haven’t seen since the days of David Diehl. As an added bonus, according to NFL.com, “he brings a mean streak and loves to finish.”

Based on what we’ve seen this year, the cost of an experienced lineman through free agency does not seem the cost-effective way to pursue depth at the position. Limited improvement from Ereck Flowers and missing out on the opportunity to grab Laremy Tunsil proved costly to the Giants.  While I would love Cam Robinson, or Ryan Ramczyk, I can imagine the other NFL teams will also be excited to bolster the Offensive Line through the NFL draft.

Stay tuned for further BigBlueDFW fan picks for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Giants vs Cowboys Tailgate Raffle....and IT'S FREE!!!

Yet another reason you don't want to miss the tailgate this year. We'll be introducing a raffle to the tailgate. I'm not talking trinket items. We're talking MEMORABILIA!!! What's the cost??? NOTHING. This raffle is completely free to show our love for the Giants fans who choose to show up at the tailgate. So come on out and join the rest of the NY Giants family as we party it up before the Giants play the Cowboys.

Giants vs Cowboys 2014 - Tailgate Information

Click here for more info from the www.meetup.com/BigBlueDFW page.

If you're unable to attend the game - you're still welcome to watch it at Buffalo Joe's. Since most of us will be at the game - the crowd might be a little lighter than normal.

For those of you that are able to attend the game - there are some details to pass along if you're interested in joining us for the tailgating festivities:

We will be tailgating in Silver Lot 13. (It's Southeast of the Stadium at the corner of Legends Way and Sanford Street). Since we won't know an exact location yet - we should be on the east side of the lot along the grass parking spots...basically the perimeter of the lot. (I've included a parking map below for illustration).

NOTE - Not everyone has to have a Silver Lot 13 Parking Pass. Most people find parking elsewhere (another parking pass, cash lot, etc) and join us at Lot 13. Feel free to join us at any time prior to the game.

Since we never know how many people to expect - we've decided to make it easy and do a "BYOB" and a "BYOF"...bring your own beer and bring your own food. Basically - if you want to eat something specific- bring it. If you want to drink something - bring it. We'll have a grill there for anyone that wants to use it and a fair amount of cooler space too. If you're traveling from out of town, we should have plenty of food to share. Keep in mind, cash donations are welcome and appreciated. All extra cash goes to group supplies and costs only.

Our plan is to be there around 10:30an (or as soon as they let us in the gate).

So come out and get an early start with the BigBlueDFW crew. It's pretty much a guaranteed good time!

Win or lose - we'll be there after the game - so join us for some post game fun!

With The 7th Round Pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, The New York Giants Select......

Jon Beason, Linebacker out of the University of Miami.....Sort of....

As most of you know, this is a tad bid inaccurate. The Giants traded their 2014 7th round pick to the Carolina Panthers for Jon Beason in the 2013 NFL season. The best part about this trade? We've already seen what this guy can do. The 7th round pick is usually regarded as a project draft pick. (Ahmad Bradshaw may go down as the best 7th round draft pick the Giants have ever had.) Beason resigned with the Giants and solidifies himself with a defensive roster spot. Not only as a solid linebacker, but a natural team leader. This Mic'ed up video on Giants.com helped to remind me of how valuable of a trade this turned out to be. Here's to seeing what he can do in 2014.

Click here to listen to Jon Beason Mic'ed Up.

Who Doesn't Love a Great Story

For the sixth time in eight years the NY Giants have drafted a running back in the NFL draft. Most of us know that the running back position doesn't seem to carry the same early round draft significance it once did. This year the Giants decided to dedicate their fourth round pick to a Heisman finalist running back out of Boston College. We all know Tom Coughlin's affiliation with  BC. That said,  I for one, am very excited about the fourth round pick of Andre Williams. I've heard that Andre Williams fell in the draft due to his limiting capabilities of being able to catch in the back field. I could care less.

While I'd like the added bonus of a pass catcher, I'd love an old school back who can handle the ball, run it up the middle  and show the fans that he's old school Giants football. I think that NFL football today tends to focus too much on hybrid player positions. I'm happy with tradition. Show the division rivals what it feels like to have a ball carrier deliver a shove to the chest. Just like ole Jack Burton used to say.

While we wait for the new season, take a moment to enjoy an article for our former NJ Star Ledger Giants beat writer Jenny Vrentes, who leaves us with a fascinating story about Andre Williams and his NFL draft experience.

CBS Sports Grades The Giants Draft Picks

Going to try and throw up some quick hits as we go finish up the NFL draft weekend. Here are some initial grades of the New York Giants drafts picks for 2014 courtesy of CBSSports.com. Can't wait to revisit this at the end of the season.

BigBlueDFW Mock Draft Fun

Since "Peter's Pick" has evolved into nothing more than a name/height/weight - I thought we'd join the fun this year and give our own predictions.

I emailed the guys that "contribute" to BigBlueDFW and asked them to pick two players they thought the Giants would draft in the 1st round.  Here's what I got:

Mac:

Darqueeze Dennard - CB - Michigan State
The 2014 12th overall draft pick will be a hard hitting, physical corner with exceptional speed, and a keen eye for the ball. This player has a not only a great name but is commonly referred to as "No-Fly Zone."  At 5'11, 197 lbs he was a 2013 First Team All American, Jim Thorpe Recipient, with 62 tackles and 4 ints.

Kony Ealy - DE - Missouri
This may be a stretch since we recently signed Robert Ayers.  However with the loss of Justin Tuck he can provide insurance along with Damontre Moore at Defensive End position.

Drew:

Odell Beckham Jr. - WR - LSU
With Mike Evans off the board the Giants look to improve the offense with a receiver who gets yards after the catch, has good speed and good hands and has return capabilities. Having a player that fills multiple needs instead of a guy who does just one role is important considering how many holes the team has.

Zach Martin - OL - Notre Dame
This is still rough for me to pick. He's versatile and seems like he has the size for Guard or Center but he spend his college career at tackle. I could see the Giants grabbing this guy and perhaps using him come the middle of the year.  I guess I just have to get over the fact that the Giants don't normally draft a guy in the first and play him right away. That's what I want.

Bob:

Zack Martin - OL - Notre Dame
In seasons where the Giants have been successful - they were good at protecting their quarterback and harassing the opponents quarterback.  This helps with protecting Eli.  Martin seems to be the popular pick as we get closer to draft day - but I think his versatility at guard and tackle gives the Giants tons of options.

Calvin Pryor - FS - Louisville
With the thought that the Giants didn't extend Antrel Rolle this offseason - I was thinking they'd find an open field tackler with an intimidating presence to replace him.  He's versatile in coverage and can help outside or in the slot.  With all the secondary free agency signings this offseason - he wouldn't have to start immediately...making a strong play towards the middle of the season.

Keep in mind - the Giants are always a wild card when it comes to the draft.  Just when you think there's a logical fit - they seem to "trust their board" and go an entirely different direction.

Members of BigBlueDFW were contacted but no other picks were submitted.  Lazy Bastards.

Ten Years Later...

With draft day right around the corner it's hard to believe it's been 10 years since the Giants drafted Eli Manning. While he's had his ups and downs, he certainly has made this a better decade for NY Giants fans. While I'm well aware a football Sunday doesn't go by without an argument among NY Giants fans about how they feel about number 10, no matter how you feel, we still appreciate the 2 Super Bowls he had a hand in.

Recently I saw this video regarding the Eli Manning for Phillips Rivers trade in a countdown for the all time draft day trades. Obviously this video was done before Eli's success as a Super Bowl MVP in 2007. What makes me laugh is the high regard back then for A.J. Smith and how he pulled off this trade and all of the wonderful toys he received in return including Phillip Rivers, Shawne Merriman, and Nate Kaeding. Two of the three are not on active rosters. Not to mention only a couple of years later he would allow Drew Brees to walk and head over to New Orleans. Simply said, thanks A.J..........

Stats Don't Lie

Thanks to Giants.com for creating this wonderful graphic to compare the top QBs of the 2004 draft class. I took the liberty of highlighting two key stats people sometimes overlook.

Yeah, the interception count is high, but I'll take the interceptions and the 2 SuperBowl MVP trophies that go along with it. Thanks Eli!!!

Can We Get Some More Game Breakdown?

I can't speak for everyone else, but I love watching game film when it's broken down to see all the things going on during a play. I had to share this because I think Sean O'Hara did a great job of breaking this highlights of the game against the Packers.

Sean O'Hara: Plays That Changed the Game

My favorite part was watching "Da Monster" Damontre Moore take down two tacklers on special teams. That guy is ready to play. I have a feeling he'll eventually be moving to the right side as a replacement for a Giants defensive end that probably won't be in a Giants uniform next year.

A Freaking Bagel

Just when you think things couldn't get any worse...and the Giants post a doughnut in Carolina.  Much like Giants teams of the past - they seem to play down to their competition and make and average quarterback look like a pro bowler.  At least Cam Newton didn't look like such a douche bag pulling out his superman pose this year.  It helps to be winning.   I wish the Play60 kid were here to talk some trash.

As far as the Giants go...whew. That was rough.  Really rough. So rough it became comical towards halftime. At least the bar had the YES Network so we could watch the tribute to Mariano Rivera.  (A small victory in what can only be described as a bad sports day)

Is anyone else worried about the contract the Giants gave to Will Beatty?  With as bad as he looks - David Diehl may be a welcome site.   I guess the Giants finally got a taste of their own medicine watching Carolina have so much success rushing only 4 players.

Now it's off to Kansas City. After starting 3 of 4 on the road - it sure would be nice for the Giants to steal one for their first victory.  I'm not too optimistic considering the last time they played Andy Reid - the Giants hung 42 on the board.  I get the sense that he's the type of coach that doesn't forget stuff like that.

All I can say to all the Giants haters out there:  At least we've won 2 Superbowls in the last 6 years.  What has your team done recently.

Crickets. (As in the sound of silence).

Just Terrible

I'm not sure what the Denver game looked like on television - but I can surely tell you it looked terrible in person.  This may be the only time where watching the replays on TV helped my personal sanity.

I really can't think of anything that looked good on Sunday. Offense?  No.  Defense?  No. Special Teams?  No.  (Heck - you might make the argument that Frank Gifford at 83 and Sam Huff at 78 looked better than anything the present Giants threw out there.)

The sad thing is - it was 10-9 at halftime.  I'm not sure if Denver made great halftime adjustments or if the combined Eli interceptions and the non-existent running game caught up with them...again.  But if you listen to the media - Peyton Manning walked on the waters of the Meadowlands.  (But since he's won "a" Super Bowl and threw for 307 yards and 2 touchdowns - you get all the credit in the world.). On the other hand - when you've won 2 Super Bowls and throw 4 picks - you're a bum...but that's the media for you.

The funny thing is - if you would have told me Sunday morning that Peyton Manning would have thrown for 307 yards and only 2 touchdowns - I would have taken that all day.  Little brother's mistakes or bad luck (seeing that an interception went off the back of a defender's foot) just proves to be too much to overcome.

The Giants need to get it together. I think @TheElPadre said it best on twitter Monday, "After every loss - I get tired of players saying 'We need to fix this or we need to fix that' after every loss."  Do your job. Stop turning the ball over and LET'S GO!

Some observations from the game:

The National Anthem done by 3 military trumpet players was awesome.

I know I've said this before - but the trash talking by fans in the northeast really lacks creativity.  Grabbing your crotch and telling every Broncos fan to "suck it" is not the only way to say the Broncos suck.

Asking the lone guy who would continually yell, "Let's Go Broncos" about the Ravens game last year might have been the most satisfying thing I said all day.  Then bringing up the fact that Tebow has won as many playoff games for the Broncos than Peyton was just the icing on the cake.  You sir - should take the sales tag off your new Broncos jersey before running your mouth.  (He didn't literally have the sales tag on - but there were a lot of shiny Denver garb wandering around).

The halftime ceremony to celebrate Bill Parcells getting his Hall of Fame ring was pretty cool.  As usual the crowd went crazy when they showed LT...but that's no surprise.

Brandon Jacobs' worldwide dance was quite violent but I liked this one much better for obvious reasons.

All in all - it was still pretty cool to watch a living legend take the field before he retires.

Programming note:  set your DVRs to record ESPN on Tuesday 9/24/13 at 7:00pm CST to record "Book of Mannings."  It's one of those ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries on the Manning family.

What Can You Do?

There's really not much to explain.  When the Giants turn the ball over 6 times - you just can't expect to win.  Heck - from the first play of the game - you just knew it was going to be "one of those games."

Just like Jumal said, "We can fix the turnovers but what are the Cowboys going to do?"  You know what - he's absolutely right.  That game should never have been that close.  And yet - the Giants were still in the game until the very end.  Some of it bad execution...some of it just bad luck.

As for the tailgate - I'd like to thank everyone that had a hand in helping organize our annual event.  A special shout out to License Plate Guy @LicensePlateGuy for stopping by again.  Joe is now a regular at the tailgate and he always takes the time for pictures and the occasional road trip story.  Man - 12 years without missing home or road games is pretty damn impressive.  Also - we would like to thank the Hynoski's (Henry, Sr. & Kathy) for joining our tailgate again.  Like Joe - you really couldn't find a nicer group of people. We take pride in making sure everyone has a good time.  Whether it's food, drinks, or the occasional shot - we'd like to think you'll tell a friend and come back next year.

All in all - the tailgate was another success.  Thanks to everyone on that came out.  Every year we seem to attract more and more people and it's always a great time.  And let there be no mistake...this is the Official Giants Tailgate in Dallas.

Hits & Misses:

I will say this: thankfully the roof was closed at AT&T Stadium that night because it was just flat out hot.  Not the kind of hot when you park and walk directly into the stadium.  You see - the BigBlueDFW crew started tailgating at 2:00.  (Actually a little before that - but that's when they let us in the parking lot).

Speaking of stadium.  Don't let the name on the building let you think the reception is any better.  It may be called AT&T stadium but the signal still sucks.

I personally thought the loudest part of the game was when they showed Hulk Hogan on the TV screen.  They booed initially when he was wearing a Giants shirt - but in typical 1984 fashion - he ripped off the Giants shirt to reveal a Cowboys shirt.  Way to go "Brother."

And what did LeBron James really think would happen when the camera's caught him in the stadium.  Just because you wore the home team's hat - doesn't give you a pass.  You were rightfully booed.

Kudos to the Cowboys fans that actually cheer when your team has the ball.  Or better yet - start the wave when your offense is on the field.  That makes me laugh.  Then again - these are the same fans that want to throw the "5 Superbowls" in your face but can't name them when asked.  (And just for the record - the Giants have 8 championships.  Sorry to burst your bubble - but the NFL didn't start in 1960).

Payday....and We're Not Talking About Candy Bars

Congratulations goes out to Victor Cruz. He is the most recent NY Giants player to receive a hefty raise in a paycheck department. Credit to him because it was earned, unlike previous players who want a pay raise to keep them in line with the other best played players (hey Osi, what's up).

Dan Graziano, with ESPN.com posted this article (click here) on who will be the next tough cap call for the Giants. I find this interesting because I've been saying some of the same things. With regards to wide receiver, if the Giants hope to keep Hakeem Nicks after this season, it's going to require another big payday. The reality is one of two things will happen this year with Hakeem Nicks. If he's healthy and has a monster season, the Giants will take a shot at trying to keep him, but probably won't have enough to pay him what he's worth. If he's not healthy, maybe we'll see a return with a discounted price tag. In my opinion, I don't see it happening. He's a potential superstar who is going to be one of the most sought after free agents if he has a good season. I can't see a way the Giants can free up enough cash to make this happen without spending less in other areas.

If that's the case, where do you sacrifice? I think I speak for most Giants fans when I say we don't want to see the defense get touched. "Make it better" we all scream. But the Giants won a Super Bowl in 2011 with a defense that was 27th overall in the league and a rushing attack that was ranked 31st. Are the days of defense wins championships behind us? Has ground and pound passed us by? I hope not. It's what I love about Giants football.

Then who gets the next big payday? Hakeem Nicks? Jason Pierre Paul (the year after)? Some outside free agent? Stevie Brown, if he has another big year? Brandon Myers, if he lives up the hype?

Yeah, yeah, I know. Let's enjoy the upcoming season and worry about the end of next season at the end of next season. I figured I'd share some off season Sunday thoughts and get the website postings moving again. We're only 55 days till the 2014 season of NY Giants football and BigBlueDFW watch parties. We're almost there.
